For Mazin Bilal, a member of Esperanza Academy Charter School’s Class of 2025, graduation marked more than the end of one chapter—it marked the beginning of a lifelong commitment to serving others.
After graduating, Mazin began his undergraduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania, where he is majoring in Neuroscience on the pre-med track. His long-term goal is to become an acute critical care trauma surgeon, open a private practice, and establish free medical clinics in rural Sudan focused on expanding healthcare access.
“The school’s readiness to provide guidance and resources allowed me to take the first steps to start grassroots medical initiatives that provide resources far beyond North Philadelphia,” Mazin shared. “As a student at Esperanza, there were many resources available for me to take an active role in my community.”
Mazin credits Esperanza Academy with helping him transform his passion for service into meaningful action. He describes the school as a place that embraces diversity while fostering a culture of service and leadership.
“Esperanza was founded to empower communities to improve their conditions, and its core mission has been invaluable to me,” he said.
His commitment to medicine and service was inspired long before high school. Both of Mazin’s parents are physicians from rural Sudan whose lives have been shaped by sacrifice, tenacity, and a dedication to helping others. Watching them persevere taught Mazin that true success is measured not only by personal achievements, but by the lives we impact.
“In striving to embody [my parents’] essence, I found myself,” he said. “For as long as I’m alive, I will keep them alive as well, living and breathing through every decision I make, every life I touch, and every act of kindness I offer.”
Now at Penn, Mazin continues to grow academically and personally while embracing new opportunities on campus. Yet no matter where his journey leads, his focus remains the same: serving others with compassion and purpose.
To younger students, Mazin offers the advice that has guided his own path.
“Be genuine. Be grounded. Be driven. Find something that keeps you up at night—something you care about. Now go chase after it… Leave a mark wherever you tread. Be irreplaceable, and most importantly, be unforgettable.”
