Maria & Ramiro Madrid: Achieving Citizenship as a Family

Stories of Hope

When we ensure that immigrants have the opportunity to live to become United States citizens, we empower some incredible role models in our communities. Here is the story of Maria and Ramiro Madrid and how they used their opportunity to help families just like them.

The Madrid family arrived in Philadelphia from Medellín, Colombia in 2008. In Medellín they worked in a church ministry that was serving families. The organization helped Maria and Ramiro travel to the United States to expand their services by requesting a religious visa on their behalf. The couple became legal permanent residents, investing further into the relationships around them.

Unsure about how to apply for citizenship on their own, the Madrid’s reached out to EILS for support. After a 6-year-long process, both Maria and Ramiro obtained citizenship and are happy to be able to continue living in the United States. They have created a home for their young family and continue to work in ministry to help other immigrant families seeking connection, encouragement, and support.

“It is great there are organizations like Esperanza that give support and help, giving opportunities to immigrants to move forward – grow and develop as people, as families and as a community.” -Ramiro Madrid

It’s not enough to see a problem – we are compelled in dark times to take action.  Generosity inspires us.  Community and connection move us forward.
