When Ciara Richardson began high school, she was facing challenges that few people could see. The transition during the pandemic left her overwhelmed, anxious, and disconnected. Once a strong student, Ciara’s grades declined, and her confidence faded as the traditional classroom environment no longer felt like a place where she could thrive.
That changed when her family reconnected with Esperanza.
Through Esperanza Cyber Charter School, Ciara found more than an alternative learning environment—she found a community that believed in her potential. With access to counseling, individualized academic support, and teachers who created a safe and encouraging space, Ciara began rebuilding her confidence and rediscovering her abilities.
“It gave me a safe space to learn and grow,” Ciara shared. “I wasn’t stressed or overwhelmed—I felt comfortable. My teachers made me feel like it was okay not to know something, and that made all the difference in helping me succeed.”
Within months, Ciara gained a new belief in her ability to succeed.
“I went from being a student who was barely passing to earning straight A’s in just half a year,” she said. “When I look back on that, I still think, wow—I really did that. It showed me that I was capable of so much more than I believed.”
With encouragement from her teachers, Ciara stepped into opportunities she once would have avoided. She enrolled in dual enrollment courses at Esperanza College of Eastern University, explored her passion for health sciences, and joined HOSA, a student leadership organization for future health professionals. Those opportunities pushed Ciara beyond her comfort zone and helped her grow as a leader.
“I went into the program as a very quiet, shy person,” Ciara said. “But through my experiences, I came out as someone completely different—more confident, more outgoing, and ready to take on challenges I never thought I could.”
That growth led Ciara to compete at the international level with HOSA, where she earned second place. By her senior year, she had become a leader among her peers through student government, extracurricular activities, and her encouragement of others.
“I realized that I could do more than I ever thought possible,” she said.
Today, Ciara is a second-year student at Temple University pursuing a degree in health science. The growth she experienced at Esperanza continues to shape how she approaches the future ahead.
