Long before Ariana entered a classroom, her family was navigating a very different reality—one defined by hospital visits, medical treatments, and the hope that one day she could simply be a student.
Born with Nephronophthisis Type 3, a rare genetic condition that left her without functioning kidneys, Ariana has spent much of her life undergoing intensive medical treatments. For years, she endured daily dialysis, and because of her weakened immune system and ongoing medical needs, attending a traditional school was never an option.
When it was time for Ariana to begin kindergarten, her parents enrolled her in Esperanza Cyber Charter School (ECCS), hoping to find an educational environment that could adapt to her unique circumstances.
Now a third-grade student, Ariana has spent her entire academic journey at ECCS. For her mother, Maria Ugarte, the school’s flexibility and partnership have made all the difference.
“I asked a lot of questions because of her appointments; I wanted to make sure we were okay,” Maria said. “The school meets you halfway.”
That support has allowed Ariana to keep learning despite a demanding medical schedule. When treatments or appointments interrupt the school day, teachers work closely with the family to ensure she stays on track academically while receiving the care she needs.
Although virtual learning is often misunderstood as isolating, Ariana’s experience has been just the opposite. Described by her mother as a “social butterfly,” she eagerly participates in class discussions and looks forward to connecting with her teachers and classmates.
Beyond the virtual classroom, Ariana participates in ECCS’s in-person events, where she builds friendships and creates lasting memories with classmates. For Maria, those experiences have been an important part of helping her daughter enjoy the childhood every student deserves.
Looking back, Maria sees a child who is thriving despite extraordinary challenges. She hopes other families facing complex medical circumstances will know that they are not alone.
“Take a leap of faith,” Maria said. “It will ease your mind during those already difficult times.”
