For Angelyssa Torres, graduating from high school was only half the celebration.
This past spring, Angelyssa graduated from Esperanza Cyber Charter School (ECCS) while also earning an associate degree in health sciences from Esperanza College. Her achievements were further recognized with the prestigious Warren Buffett Scholarship, which will fully fund her bachelor’s degree at Delaware Valley University, where she plans to study Zoological Science and pursue her dream of becoming a veterinarian.
Her accomplishments were years in the making. Angelyssa’s educational journey was shaped by challenges from an early age. After experiencing persistent bullying at her previous school, her parents enrolled her in ECCS as they searched for a long-term solution.
But what began as a temporary fix soon became the foundation for Angelyssa’s success.
As a neurodivergent student with ADHD and dyslexia, she found an environment at ECCS where individualized support and academic encouragement helped her grow into a confident learner—prepared to embrace new experiences.
“Esperanza Cyber Charter School gave me flexibility while also challenging me academically,” she said. “Throughout my years there, I learned to manage my time, stay organized, and become an independent student.”
During her final two years of high school, Angelyssa participated in Esperanza College’s Early College program, earning college credits tuition-free while completing her high school education. She embraced every opportunity available to her, serving as a student ambassador, caring for community gardens, and representing Esperanza College through HOSA–Future Health Professionals at state and international competitions.
Reflecting on her experience, Angelyssa encourages other students to consider ECCS.
“When you’re struggling with virtual learning, the school makes sure you get the help you need,” Angelyssa said. “Studying online, you never truly feel alone.”
Her journey culminated with the Legacy Award, recognizing her as the first student to complete her entire education through Esperanza—from kindergarten at ECCS through graduation from Esperanza College—and to do so a year ahead of schedule.
Looking back, Angelyssa credits the teachers, staff, and mentors who continually encouraged her to step outside her comfort zone, embrace new opportunities, and believe in what she could achieve.
“I’m excited to continue growing, meet new people, and explore more opportunities as I work toward my goal of being a veterinarian,” she said.
