SUMMARY:Plena Libre
DESCRIPTION:“A mad weave of polyrhythms that simply sizzle.” – The Boston Herald \nSpend an evening with the four-time Grammy award-winning virtuoso musicians of Plena Libre – first in an intimate and entertaining introduction to Plena and Bomba exclusively from the Teatro Esperanza archives – then\, experience Plena Libre in full regalia with selections from their recent high-octane live performance from Puerto Rico. \nPlena and Bomba are distinctive musical styles of Puerto Rico. Bandleader Gary Nuñez and his orchestra combine a hard-hitting horn section\, master hand drummers\, and lush three-part vocal harmonies into a modern blend\, mixing traditional Puerto Rican rhythms with modern Afro-Caribbean influences\, and folkloric musical roots with contemporary compositions. \nThey’ve toured the world from Morocco to California and everywhere in between\, and recorded with some of the biggest names in Latin music\, like Eddie Palmieri\, Papo Lucca\, and Nestor Torres\, reviving the once-dormant plena sound for a new generation\, electrifying audiences with a dazzling spectacle of horns\, drums\, and dance. \nJUST ADDED!\nSpecial Bonus Feature \nBodas de Sangre \nTeatro Quarantine \nStay tuned at the end of Plena Libre’s presentation for a special bonus feature by Teatro Quarantine – the first episode of Frederico Garcia Lorca’s Bodas de Sangre! \nTeatro Quarantine presents Lorca’s seminal work for the stage as you’ve never experienced it – produced virtually with actors and sets in remote locations. SUMMARY:¡Vívelo!
DESCRIPTION:iVivelo! is a journey through a wide diversity of rhythms and traditions that gave rise to the Son Jarocho genre in the Mexican State of Veracruz. \nThis unique art form began to develop during the Spanish Colonization of the region: pre-hispanic dance traditions\, sacred-profane syncretism\, indigenous instruments\, clothing\, and symbolism mixed with African influence from Spanish slaves in dance\, storytelling\, and music. \nThis all mixed together makes ¡Vívelo! – an experience for all ages and audiences to enjoy this contemporary version of Son Jarocho while still distinguishing its essence and traditional characteristics. \n______________________________________________________________________________________ \nVIRTUAL LATINO ARTS FESTIVAL  \nEsperanza Arts Center presents our first annual Virtual Latino Arts Festival\, celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with streamed performances by Latino artists and traditions from around the world.

SUMMARY:Kun-Yang Lin/Dance Company - Faith Project
DESCRIPTION:Kun-Yang Lin/Dancers’ Faith Project/The Door is an abstract dance work created by founder and Artistic Director\, Kun-Yang Lin\, that contemplates the relationship between religious practice and contemporary dance. An important part of the project consisted of “story circle” encounters with community participants from various faith perspectives\, dance artists and other artistic collaborators. Engaging with practitioners of diverse spiritual outlooks\, Lin and his dance artists’ considered the role movement plays in religious rituals and actions. KYL/D worked with Interfaith Philadelphia to recruit community participants\, who engaged in verbal and physical call-and-response activities with the dancers and the project’s multimedia and sound design collaborators. Kun-Yang Lin/Dancers collaborated with Kimerer LaMothe—a scholar working at the intersection of dance and religion to structure the story circle conversations. The company explored new possibilities in visual design with multimedia designer Jared Mezzocchi\, and composer/sound designer Cory Neale who created a sound score for the final work as well as Sara Outing for set design and Jill Peterson for costume design. Major support for the original creation and performance of Faith Project was provided by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage\, with additional support from The National Endowment for the Arts and Temple University. Faith Project premiered in March 2018 at Prince Theater. The company is excited to bring back the full-length version of Faith Project/The Door in for the first time since it’s premiere in collaboration with Esperanza!
