So, why should you go green?

First of all, we believe this is a matter of biblical responsibility. We are called as God’s people to care for the creation he has given to us to inhabit. Genesis 1 says this:

“Then God said, ‘I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.’ And it was so.”

How does this issue affect minorities, and the poor?

It is widely acknowledged that global warming has a much more serious effect on people who are already more vulnerable to natural disasters, have less access to resources, and less assurance of physical safety – the poor. Around the world, the pollution produced from burning fossil fuels is creating an ecological unbalance, causing harsher hurricanes, storms, and floods, and more serious droughts which are becoming more common every day.

Also, in our own country, the conversation about the environment and “going green” often happens in exclusive circles that do not include low-income or minority people. It is our responsibility as people of faith to bring this important conversation into our congregations, and to the underprivileged in our own neighborhoods. That way, we can make the conversation more inclusive, and the solutions more powerful!
