I have joined the Esperanza for America campaign because I believe that we have a spiritual duty “to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves”(Prov. 31:8), in this case millions of undocumented immigrants who came to the United States looking for freedom and opportunity as many have done since the birth of this country.
As a pastor of a congregation of 2500 members, I see firsthand the devastating effects of a broken immigration system that tears families apart, cuts the dreams of millions of young men and women who have grown up here but have no future in the US, a system that implements its laws arbitrarily and without compassion.
I stand firm in my belief that the United States has the right to protect its borders and indeed it must. However, in doing this we must not forget as a nation built on immigrants’ dreams, sweat and labor that we are particularly strong because of its diversity and its value of honest work for honest pay.
It is time that we seek a solution that continues to weave the strengths of immigrants filled with hope and knowledge with our need to grow as a nation that welcomes the stranger and stands as a beacon of opportunity, hope, freedom and justice.
