Esperanza Talks: Ms. Gabrielle Moshier

#EsperanzaNews, Featured

Meet Ms. Gabrielle Moshier, Esperanza Academy (EA) eight grade English teacher and chess coach.  Ms. Moshier started the EA chess team initially to give students a new extracurricular opportunity. At the beginning, it was an all-boys team but rapidly there were enough girls interested in the sport, she had to create an all-girls team. The team, commonly known as “the EA Chess Queens” has now grown into a national success; placing third at the 2018 all-girls nationals.

Ms. Moshier has inspired many of her students of whom she is “very proud of.” Chess has been commonly known as a white-male dominated sport and she believes it is important, especially for the girls, to attend the tournaments, do well for themselves and be seen.

“It is important for people to see them there because they belong there.”

Daiana Espindola, captain of the all-girl chess team is one of Ms. Moshier’s students. If you want to learn more about her experience click here.
